Prion Research providing solutions for economic, environmental and social consequences

Livestock diseases associated with prions that have emerged over the last 15 years have incited significant consumer concern worldwide regarding the food safety of livestock and livestock products. Launched in 2005 with an initial investment of $35 million over seven years, the Alberta Prion Research Institute (APRI) has investigated many new approaches to understanding prion and protein misfolding diseases.

The research supported by APRI and its collaborators has resulted in easing of economic trade barriers for Canada and other countries who have discovered prion-related diseases in their livestock populations.

APRI, now a program under AI Bio, continues to support fundamental, applied and multidisciplinary research geared toward providing solutions for the economic, environmental and social consequences of prion and prion-like protein misfolding diseases.

APRI is also focused on exploring frontier science linking prion-like protein misfolding diseases to human neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.
