Prion and Protein Misfolding Diseases

Removal of Specified Risk Material
Specified risk material (SRM) is tissue from prion-infected animals that may harbour infectivity. To limit the spread of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle, SRM can no longer be used in animal feeds, pet food, or fertilizers and must be disposed of according to the enhanced feed ban put in place by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA): hauled in dedicated trucks, processed, and then buried in landfills, burned in high-temperature incinerators, or used to make bioenergy.
