Alberta Innovates is pleased to announce this new funding program, which is designed to provide funding for applied research and product development that leads to the following:

  • new or improved food ingredients or bioactives,
  • food products,
  • supplemented foods, or
  • natural health products (NHPs)/nutraceuticals.

In addition, the end product must be

  • derived from Alberta crop or livestock commodities,
  • competitive in the domestic and global marketplace,
  • respond to domestic and/or international demand, and
  • promote wellness and/or prevent or treat chronic diseases.

The program helps to bring together food processors and academic researchers in a unique initiative that supports the development of globally competitive food innovations for entry into local, national or international markets.

It aims to support Alberta food, beverage, and NHP processors in their efforts to increase revenues from value-added food production.

The main applicant may be a company, a qualified researcher, or a team of researchers within an academic institution and/or provincial or federal research centres. The research must have a strong Alberta connection, with preference given to those projects that are led by an Alberta-based principal investigator.  The qualified researcher must have a company co-applicant that will make a cash contribution of 25 per cent towards the cash value of the project.

Applicants are invited to submit a Full Proposal for a non-repayable grant of up to $100,000.

Deadline for submission of the Full Proposal is September 11, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. MST.
